'Cooperation Between Federal, State Governments To Rebuild Kelantan Lauded', Bernama, 10 January 2015

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) -- Cooperation between the federal government and Kelantan government to rebuild the state after being hit by severe floods has been lauded by various parties.

They hailed the collaboration and hoped that it was a step in the right direction for both governments to build on the cooperation.

1Malaysia Foundation chairman Dr Chandra Muzaffar said that cooperation between the federal and Kelantan government, irrespective of political understanding was necessary for post-flood recovery and repair.

"Political, partisan, and personality issues should be put aside so that all the effort could be devoted to the welfare of the people of Kelantan," he said in a statement here, today.

He hoped that this cooperation would lead to a more deeper and complete understanding between the Barisan Nasional (BN) and PAS government in Kelantan, including in aspects of envrionmental development, economics, politics, society and religion.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Malay Entrepreneurs and Merchants' Association (Perdasama) president Datuk Moehamad Izat Emir said this cooperation was hoped to be a good start to ensure that the economy and the lives of the people of Kelantan were given the primary focus.

"This is a good start to making sure that unity of the Malays is always maintained regardless of political influence," he said.

Political analyst Assoc Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) said this cooperation should be seen as the benchmark for resolving flood issues.

He said that political ideology should not be a hurdle in efforts to help people, especially during disasters such as the floods that have hit the country.

"I feel this is a new and better beginning under the leadership of PAS in Kelantan and maybe the flood situation can be used by both parties to further strengthen their relationship for the betterment of society and the country," he said when contacted by Bernama.

Sivamurugan also said that both the governments must ignore those who oppose this collaboration because, they may be too obsessed with narrow political thinking.

He said the people of Kelantan should also give their support because a well established collaboration would provide many indirect advantages to them.

He also said that the cooperation between the two governments proved that both parties emphasised social welfare and they indirectly set aside their political ideologies.

Sharing a similar view, 1Malaysia Foundation Trustee member Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said national harmony could be preserved if such collaboration was continued.

Lee said social welfare was more important than political ideology and the approach used by the federal and state governments was the best way to address the flood situation.

"The collaboration between BN and PAS will definitely revitalise the people of Kelantan," he said.
